Vermont Considers Cash Legislation

It appears that Vermont is the latest US state to consider introducing legislation to force cash acceptance. A Senate bill proposes that businesses will need to accept cash for transactions under $1,000. It will be voted on at the start of July.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp data shows those without bank accounts in Vermont has increased from 0.7% of households in 2019 to 2.5% in 2021.

Discussions about whether the bill is needed or not have included reference to the increasing frequency of natural weather events due to climate change.

Elsewhere in the US, bipartisan bills are currently being considered in the state legislatures of Wisconsin and Florida respectively

that, if passed, would require retail establishments to accept cash whilst, as reported in last month’s Cash & Payment News™, Los Angeles City Council has recently voted to ban cashless retail business.
