Payments Changing Slowly in Switzerland

The second payment methods survey of companies in Switzerland took place in Spring 2023, with 1,750 companies taking part.

Since the last survey in 2021, companies have increased the range of payment methods they accept, with mobile payment apps and transfers increasingly accepted. Cash acceptance remains high and has not changed much. Acceptance of cash continues to be supported by the public.

The majority of companies state that they are satisfied with their access to cash. However, some companies report that they do not have an alternative available to their current supply source, for example a bank branch. As with cash acceptance, the report notes that in the case of a decrease in the cash infrastructure, one in four companies would use less cash, which would in turn be likely to have a negative effect on cash acceptance.
