National Bank of Kazakhstan (NBK)
Digital Tenge: the digital tenge programme is gathering pace. Working with the Government and the Anti-Corruption Agency, the NBK launched pilots to track public spending in road construction and repairs in Atyrau and Pavlodar regions (100 million and 70 million digital tenge). Further pilots in Akmola support lending to farmers for livestock purchases (81.8 million digital tenge) and subsidies for agricultural machinery (2 million digital tenge).
Payments: Kazakhstan operates 15 payment systems. These include the NBK’s Interbank Money Transfer System and Interbank Clearing System, which handle most cashless transactions in tenge. Private systems support this ecosystem, covering card payments and money transfers.
In 2024, the number of payments processed grew by 19.1%, while their total value rose by 51.7%. On average, the NBK’s payment systems handled 352,600 transactions per day, worth around 6 trillion tenge.
