At the Future of Cash conference in Warsaw last November, there were a number of presentations and conversations about ATM business models and interchange fees.

It was claimed that we are now well past ‘peak’ ATM around the world, although ATM decline and use of cash are, it was claimed, not correlated. However, even the discussion of whether we are at ‘peak’ ATM is as an indicator of change and the need to reflect.

It is worth noting that while it is often said that alternative options for accessing cash are a good replacement for ATMs, in the UK only 16% of people are familiar with cash back and even fewer, 5%, actually use it. The European Central Bank studies, and others, have found similar results.
