UK 2025 ATM Withdrawals Fall

Data from LINK, in the UK, shows that compared to 2024 ATM transaction volumes were 1.27 billion (down 8.3%) and withdrawal values were £76.67billion (down 4.2%). The average ATM withdrawal value in 2025 was £92.11.

LINK transactions represent 77% of all ATM transactions, most of the remainder being where consumers use their own bank or building society’s ATMs. 87% of cash withdrawals are made via cash machines, followed by cards over the counter at bank branches, post offices or banking hubs, then cashing a cheque / using a passbook, and cashback.

However, Nationwide, the UK’s biggest building society, reports that cash withdrawals from its 1,270 ATMs increased from £4 billion in 2017 to £4.2 billion, apparently benefiting from the withdrawal of banks from the high street. Its ATM network has seen four years of consecutive growth. The number of cash withdrawals increased about 6% compared with 2024, driven equally by In December 2025, Visa and Mastercard reportedly reached a revised $38 billion settlement with US merchants who alleged the card networks imposed excessive charges for processing credit card transactions.
