Use of Mobile Payment Means at the Point of Sale
The five countries who spend the most using mobile payments at the point of sale are China, America, the UK, France and Japan.
While the figure for Asia significantly exceeds other regions, dragging up the worldwide average at the same time, it is interesting to note the uptake in the Caribbean and Central America in particular.
It is hard to understand the decline in Europe in 2022. On the back of hardly any growth in North America, Australia and Oceania, South America and Asia, worldwide user numbers have also stagnated in 2022. Perhaps the COVID driven surge experienced in 2020 has run out of steam.
The growth since 2017 does reflect the impact of smartphones and payment apps around the world. Although the worldwide penetration is still only at 20%, 1.5 billion people, it is part of the explanation of changing payment habits with cash.
