A study of the use of mobile money in Bangladesh gives a new perspective on how it differs from other payment methods 1.

The study found that using mobile money can affect spending decisions and how people perceive money itself. Studying the behaviour of household finances shows that people are often more willing to spend when using fewer tangible forms of money like debit and credit cards than when spending in cash. However, spending with mobile money was different.

Digital technologies are rapidly changing what people understand to be money and their relationship with it. In Emerging Market Economies, mobile money is creating a revolution similar to the change that credit cards brought in Advanced Economies such as the US. Spending is easier and quicker.
