Physical Card Payments Overtaken by Codes in Japan

A new Japanese survey has found that the most common method for cashless payments is to use a barcode or QR code displayed on a smartphone, with 84.2% of people using one. Earning points or receiving cashback was the top reason for using codes, followed by simple and speedy transactions. 62% cited ‘no need for cash’ as a benefit.

Global Reach of M-PESA Massively Increases

Safaricom and PayPal are linking M-PESA and PayPal accounts to allow seamless fund transfers across PayPal’s extensive global network. There are over 35 million M-PESA users and 2 million businesses and micro-traders across Kenya.

Vietnam Focuses on Increasing Cashless Payments

Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister has signed an official dispatch urging ministries, sectors, and localities to intensify efforts to promote cashless payments in order to meet the payment demand of citizens and businesses, to prevent tax evasion and criminal activities, and to ensure strict enforcement of laws against violators.
