Why Norges Bank Said No to a CBDC

Norges Bank has now published four reports that led it to conclude in December 2025 that introducing a CBDC was currently not warranted.

The reports describe the exploration work and the assessments underpinning that conclusion. Norges Bank will continue to explore tokenisation and different forms of CBDC in order to introduce a CBDC should it be necessary.

More Banks Authorised to Handle China’s Digital Yuan

The People’s Bank of China has added 12 new banks to the list of those allowed to handle the digital yuan, bringing the total number of authorised banks to 22.

The digital yuan was launched in 2019 as a pilot and most retail customers are able to make safe and low-cost transactions via platforms such as Alibaba’s Alipay and Tencent Holding’s WeChat Pay.
