Rwandan Banks Analyse the Case for a CBDC

The Rwanda Bankers’ Association (RBA) has considered lessons to be learnt from the implementations of CBDC in the Bahamas, Jamaica and Nigeria 1. The study finds that bank disintermediation did not materialise – commercial bank deposits actually grew significantly in all three countries after CBDC introduction.

The primary challenge across all cases was low public adoption rather than financial instability, with uptake remaining extremely low. Rwanda has limited smartphone ownership (34.3%) and low internet access (29.8%). Its opportunities are the need for enhanced payment system resilience, financial inclusion, and reduced cross-border remittance costs.

Ethiopia Explores CBDC Frameworks

The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) has reportedly initiated an exploratory review of potential CBDC frameworks to understand global digital currency developments.
