Cash Use Falls Back Slightly in the US

Results of the US Survey of Consumer Payment Choice (SCPC) and Diary of Consumer Payment Choice (DCPC) have been published by the Federal Reserve Banks of Atlanta and Boston and Federal Reserve Financial Services1. The DCPC, in which consumers record details of specific transactions (including dollar values) and their payment choices, was conducted in October 2025.

What Drives Consumer Payment Behaviour?

In 2019 National Westminster Bank (NatWest) commissioned independent academic research to look into the drivers of consumer payment behaviour, including consumer attitudes and intentions towards cash. The research was carried out by Professor Darren Duxbury, Dr Thanos Verousis and by David Marsh. This is a short summary of their work with the full research being published in due course.

Snapshot of Asia in 2021

YouGov have issued their 2021 Global Banking and Finance Report, having surveyed 1,000 people in 17 countries representing a nationally representative sample with three exceptions. These were China, where sampling was ‘online representative’, India ‘nationally urban representative’ and Mexico, which was nationally representative but with an urban bias. Six Asian countries were involved – Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia and Singapore.

‘Ready, Steady, Go’? Results of the 3rd BIS Survey on CBDC

The Bank of International Settlements (BIS) received 65 responses to its latest Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) survey of which 21 were from Advanced Economies (AE) and 44 from Emerging Market/Developing Economies (EMDE). The results are published in BIS Papers 114, authored by Codruta Boar and Andreas Wehrli.

ECB Emphasises the Importance of Cash
